Clearway builds partnerships with municipalities to encourage renewable power adoption through Community Solar subscriptions. We work with municipalities in our key service areas of Illinois, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and New York. Through our partnerships, municipalities can bring residents together to collectively build a clean energy future and help fight the effects of climate change – no roof required.
In addition to helping reduce local dependence on fossil fuels, participants reduce their utility charges through solar credits that are applied to their bill in return for their subscription.

The Community Solar Process
Clearway Community Solar Farms produce renewable solar electricity that goes to your community. Polluted energy sources are replaced with clean ones on the power grid.
In return, subscribers receive solar bill credits automatically applied to their utility bill, reducing their costs on their electricity bill.
Subscribers pay Clearway for the solar bill credits, and receive a guaranteed discount every month. That means that for every $1.00 received in bill credits, subscribers pay a reduced amount.
*Savings calculated as a value of the net metering credits generated by the residential solar subscription. Clearway is not responsible for utility delays in applying net metering credits.

A Closer Look at Solar Farm Subscriptions
- Every month, local solar energy is generated by the Clearway solar farm. We have a number of farms in development throughout Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York State in varying construction phases – our teams are building them. Minnesota farms are complete.
- Your municipality can partner with Clearway to promote Community Solar subscriptions to your residents through a custom-built partnership.
- In return for their subscriptions, subscribers receive solar bill credits applied to their electric bills, reducing electricity costs.
- Subscribers pay Clearway separately for the cost of the solar bill credits, at a monthly discounted rate that guarantees savings.
- Once the solar farm’s construction is complete, the farm is connected to the local utility and then begins production. Customers aren’t billed until production begins, so during this construction phase, reservations on the solar farm are contractually secured without any charges.
A Closer Look at Energy Savings
- Once the farm is live, solar production and billing begins. In return for supporting solar generation, subscribers receive bill credits – we call these “solar bill credits.”
- The solar bill credits are applied to a subscriber’s utility bill, reducing that bill. To recap, subscribers will continue to receive a monthly utility bill. But now, the supply charges on the utility bill will be reduced by credits received as a result of being a Clearway customer.
- Subscribers receive a separate bill from Clearway. The Clearway bill is for the cost of the solar bill credits with the guaranteed discount.
- In short, for every $1.00 in credits received on a utility bill that reduces charges, subscribers pay Clearway separately at a discounted rate that renders savings – all while supporting renewable energy.
